Ambient Rockers Anathema are back with their eleventh full length, which will soon uncover their darkest, most challenging and even unexpected music that the sextet has ever given their name to. Led by the Daniel and Vincent Cavanagh brothers, the band further comprising drummer John Douglas, singer Lee Douglas, bassist Jamie Cavanagh and keyboardist Daniel Cardoso, started recording 'The Optimist' in Donegal, Ireland to end in Glasgow with producer Tony Doogan (Mogwai, Belle & Sebastian, Super Furry Animals). The story of "The Optimist" is a sequel to the Anathema classic "A Fine Day To Exit" from 2001.
The idea for ‘The Optimist’ was born from the artwork of the 2001 album ‘A Fine Day To Exit’. Daniel explains: “We put sound, feelings and crucially, our own hopes and fears into another person and made him the subject of the songs then weaving my own internal monologue into the narrative or The Optimist. It was John's idea to write a narrative, so I took A Fine Day To Exit as the starting point. Vincent; “The guy who disappeared - you never knew what happened to him, did he start a new life? Did he succumb to his fate? It was never explained ”. With that undefined fate of that person in mind, the three writing band members started the album and now bring the story to an end. An end on which the listener himself also has influence.
