SOD
S.O.D. (Stormtroopers of Death) is a legendary American crossover thrash band that fused thrash metal with hardcore punk. Despite a relatively small discography, the band became one of the most influential acts in the history of crossover metal.
S.O.D. (Stormtroopers of Death) was formed in 1985 as a side project featuring members of Anthrax, Nuclear Assault and, later, M.O.D. The line-up consisted of guitarist Scott Ian, drummer Charlie Benante, bassist Dan Lilker and vocalist Billy Milano. Originally intended as a fun studio project, S.O.D. quickly became one of the most influential crossover bands of all time.
Their debut album, Speak English or Die, is widely regarded as one of the defining releases in crossover thrash. Combining blistering thrash metal with hardcore punk, humour and unmatched intensity, the album inspired generations of thrash, hardcore and grindcore musicians. Songs such as March of the S.O.D., Milk and United Forces remain genre-defining classics.
Although S.O.D. reunited only occasionally, later releases including Bigger than the Devil, Live at Budokan and Rise of the Infidels further cemented the band's legendary reputation. Their influence extends far beyond their relatively small catalogue, with countless artists citing S.O.D. as a major inspiration.
For vinyl collectors, S.O.D. is an essential name. Original pressings of Speak English or Die are among the most sought-after crossover thrash records ever released, while modern reissues, coloured vinyl editions and deluxe pressings continue to be highly desirable collector's items.
