Damnation - 20th Anniversary Edition (black vinyl)

Item No.: 19658861181

Label : Music for Nations
Release : 15-12-2023

To mark the 20th anniversary of Opeth's seminal 2003 album "Damnation," a special vinyl re-issue project has been developed to honor a pivotal and seminal moment in the band's illustrious history. Originally recorded in the quiet of Åkerfelt's native Sweden, the album, acclaimed by fans and critics alike, was additionally produced by Porcupine Tree's Steven Wilson. in 2015, it was remixed and remastered and pressed on vinyl along with the two-song album Deliverance.

This release marks the first time that "Damnation" has received an exclusive and luxurious vinyl pressing. An album that represents a paradigm shift in the band's compositional approach, pushing their metal roots from the forefront of their arsenal. Instead, it has been replaced with an added insight into atmosphere, atmospherics and progressive rock, which together with Åkerfeldt's signature lyricism and musicality creates a unique album of ethereal beauty and longing that remains at the forefront of many Opeth fans' minds.

Commenting on the release, Mikael Åkerfeldt, lead vocalist of the band, said, "Hi guys! Our old "partners in cryme" Music For Nations are planning a 20th anniversary re-release of one of our odd records, this time "Damnation". We want our records to always be available on vinyl, and it turns out we can't hold stock! Our vinyl editions are selling out fast. I saw it with my own eyes when I helped out in a record store during the pandemic. Some customers didn't know they were buying from one of the people responsible for the music. Of course, I said, "Good record, good band!". So before people start whining again about "another reissue, another money grab," I want to emphasize that it really comes down to public demand. "Damnation" is a special record, even if they are all special to me. I remember listening to the first mix on headphones in a seedy hotel somewhere in the UK. I could hardly believe it was us, me, Peter, Lopez, Mendez (and old Steve on keys). It was completely different from anything we had done before, and frankly, since. Of all our records, I think this one is best suited for the vinyl format because it's not so crammed with stuff. It's a pretty breezy record with 5 musicians and also recorded on 2-inch tape. It's a record I'm immensely proud of, and I think it remains a fan favorite as well."

Steven Wilson adds, "I remember getting death threats from metal fans at the time for "ruining" the band! As if it could be the intention of anyone but Mikael to make such a record. Damnation was the moment when everyone understood that they would not be squeezed into the confines of any genre or label, and that the band's importance and influence would be far-reaching. Rightfully so, Damnation is now considered a timeless masterpiece, and I'm very proud to have played my part in it."
